Advanced skin care after 40.

Hi there!

It's me Svetlana.

In this post I would like to reiterate "after 40" skin care recommendations from dermatologists. You remember that as we age we will need to step up a notch in our skin care routine to counteract and prevent all the environmental damage and skin's declining ability to repair and restore itself.
So, this is what we have to do.

1. Instead of gentle cleanser, start using an exfoliating cleanser.
Exfoliating cleansers contain glycolic or lactic acid (to accelerate exfoliation) and salicylic acid (to unclog pores and make them appear smaller). If your skin is sensitive, you can still use a gentle cleanser but rotate it with more aggressive exfoliator (a scrub or a home microdermabrasion kit) once a week or so to get rid of dead skin-dulling cells.

2. Fight free radicals outside and inside.
Free radicals environmental danger to skin is not imaginary, it's real. Damage from free radicals causes fine lines and uneven skin tone. Here our home-made masks armomentarium is very helpful. Use fruits and berries that contain vitamin C (like citrus fruit), beta carotenoids (from carrots or tomatoes), green tea (as eye compresses using cold used tea bags). Also one may use a serum or a cream containing an antioxidant every morning, after cleansing and before applying a sunscreen.
Also indulge on foods reach in antioxidants (berries, broccoli, tomatoes, red grapes, garlic, spinach, green tea, carrots, soy, or whole grains).

3. Use a sunscreen religiously!

4. Start using a retinoid cream regularly. It increases skin cell turnover and promotes collagen production (makes skin look smoother). Go for either prescription strength (see a dermatologist for it) or over-the-counter. Use it at night time as tolerated (retinoids sometimes irritate and cause dryness). Use Retin-A or Renova, or over-the-counter retinol. Find your own optimal frequency of use. Some people tolerate them daily, some need once a week application. If your skin reacts to retinoid with too much irritation, consider using it only as a mask (for 15 min once a week) instead of leaving on for the whole night.

5. Sleep on your back to prevent permanent wrinkles and skin sagging.

6. Exercise for better skin tone and condition.

I hope it helps.
So long!
